Brew Blog reports some interesting happenings in the race for craft beer supermarket sales. From this post:
Blue Moon Belgian White Ale has staked its claim as the second-best-selling craft beer in supermarkets, according to beer sales statistics from Nielsen.
Blue Moon, from Coors Brewing Company, held 6.9 percent market share of the craft segment during the 13 weeks ended December 1, according to Nielsen. Blue Moon seasonals, meanwhile, held 2.2 percent share, up 1.3 points.
Blue Moon edged Samuel Adams Boston Lager for the No. 2 spot, according to Nielsen. While statistically tied at 6.9 percent share each, Blue Moon is slightly larger. And Sam Adams share of craft actually declined during the period, dropping by 0.6 points.
The top 20 brands, accoring to Nielsen are as follows:

4. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

12. Redhook Ballard Bitter India Pale Ale
13. Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat
14. Pyramid Hefeweizen
15. Leinenkugel’s seasonal
16. Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale
17. Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss

There’s been a lot of talk recently on who actually deserves the “craft” title, and more than a few of these beers listed are surely in the grey area. I suppose that this list only proves that production volume and distribution area are deciding factors in the race for supermarket stardom. Cheers to the “little guys” on the list for making a great showing!
